My friend Emiko studied in a university here in the U.S. but it took her a few years to understand the language and culture. Nobody told her anything about Halloween so, of course, she was shocked when crowds of children arrived at her door saying, “Trick or treat!” and holding out their bags.
She looked in the bags and saw all of the candy and thought it was a holiday where all of the children go around giving their candy to the adults. She said, “Oh, thank you!” and began taking a piece of candy out of each bag. All of the children started screaming at her and a little girl began crying and ran to her mother, “THAT LADY STOLE MY CANDY!!!”
Some lessons must be learned the hard way.
I said, “You’re lucky you still have your hands!”
